“Five years later, in 2013, following the passage of Labour MP Louisa Wall’s member’s bill to legalise same-sex marriage in New Zealand, the Parliament commissioned artist Elizabeth Kerekere to create a piece of artwork to celebrate the momentous occasion. The artwork, entitled Mana Takatāpui, combines traditional Māori tukutuku panels with the colours of the rainbow, a worldwide symbol of the LGBTI community, and has enjoyed pride of place in the Rainbow Room ever since.”
